The
Weber transmitter system consists of four major components. It begins with the
SFG, which provides cw sodium resonance
radiation. The SFG laser beam is directed into the Acousto-Optic Modulator. The
AOM function is to shift the frequency on a shot by shot basis. The light is
then amplified seven orders of magnitude by the PDA. The light that enters the
PDA is continuous wave. The light exits as short seven nanosecond pulses with a
repetition rate of 50 Hz. The PDA pump source is a frequency doubled pulsed
Nd:YAG. The pulses are then sent out to probe the atmosphere.
